THE FORTHCOMING BOOK

BEFORE THE WORLD TEACHES YOU SOMETHING CHEAPER

A mother-to-daughter book about the things we hope our daughters will know before experience has to teach them.

By Lisa Mitchell

I began writing this book for my daughter. Somewhere along the way, I realized I was also writing it for the girl I used to be and for women who are still learning some of these things now.

Some lessons cost more when we learn them late.

Women are expected to recognize the difference between attention and care, ask for what they need, understand their own money, choose their friends well and know when kindness has begun to cost them too much.

We’re often expected to know these things without anyone having said them plainly.

Before the World Teaches You Something Cheaper brings those conversations together. The book moves through love, friendship, money, manners, boundaries, motherhood and the quiet ways women can begin leaving themselves out of their own lives.

I can’t prepare my daughter for every choice she’ll make, and I don’t want to hand her a script for living. I want her to have words she can return to when something doesn’t feel right, when she’s deciding what to accept or when she needs to find her way back to herself.

Inside the book

The difference between being wanted and being valued.

How to say no without explaining yourself to death.

Why knowing how your own money works matters.

What friendship, privacy and loyalty require.

How to be kind without becoming easy to use.

What good manners reveal about how we notice and value other people.

How women disappear into relationships, work and motherhood without realizing it.

What I hope my daughter remembers after making a mistake.

The importance of knowing she can always call home

The kind of book I want to place in her hands

I want this book to feel like being told the truth by someone who loves you and isn’t trying to frighten, impress or lecture you.

Some pages are practical. Others are personal. There are things I learned from my mother, things I learned too late and things I’m still trying to live more honestly myself.

My daughter won’t need every page at the same time. I hope she’ll return to different parts of it as she grows and find something that meets her where she is.

Something to read while you’re waiting

I’ve made a free guide for mothers of teenage and young adult daughters. It includes five conversations you may want to have before there’s an urgent reason to have them, with real situations and words you can actually use.
