Some conversations are easy to postpone when nothing has happened yet. She seems too young, and you do not want to make the subject bigger or more awkward than it needs to be.
Then she comes to you hurt, confused or already trying to manage something alone, and you wish you had found the words sooner.
This free guide helps you begin five conversations about attention, saying no, money, resentment and knowing she can always come home. Each section includes a situation you may recognize, what to notice and words that sound like something a real mother could say.
WHAT WE HAND DOWN MATTERS
Long before we sit down for a serious conversation, our daughters are already learning from the way we live. They notice how we speak about ourselves, what we tolerate, whether we ask for what we need, how we treat people and what we do when something no longer feels right.
Some of what we give them will never fit inside a box or appear in a will. It is passed down quietly, in ordinary moments, and it may shape what they accept long after they leave home.
That is the inheritance I keep thinking about as I write.

Before the World Teaches You Something Cheaper gathers those conversations in one place. I am writing it for my daughter, and for the woman who can still see parts of her younger self in these pages.
I want it to feel like a mother sitting beside her daughter and telling her the truth without lecturing her. I know no book can prevent heartbreak or mistakes. I want these words to be somewhere in her memory when she is deciding what to accept, what to leave and whether she can call home.

ABOUT LISA
I’m Lisa Mitchell, a mother and writer. I created Never Come Empty Handed, a book-led project about the lessons we pass down to our daughters.
The name begins with something literal: arrive with flowers, bring a hostess gift, offer to help and show appreciation for someone’s welcome.
It also asks what you bring as a person. I want my daughter to move through life with manners and consideration for others, while carrying enough self-respect and backbone to recognize what isn’t good enough for her.
